What happens if a death should occur at home? Under Spanish law, the Guardia Civil (police) must be called. They will then contact a doctor and finally the Guardia Civil will have telephoned the Funeral Director to attend to the deceased. The Funeral Director who attends to the deceased may not speak English and you will be asked to sign a “body release form” which is a legal document allowing the deceased to be removed from the home. In many cases this document forms part of the official contract whereby price is not disclosed until arrangements have been completed. This is a legal binding contract whereby you have no control over the arrangements or price. This is a dreadful situation for anyone to experience, especially when in a foreign country, not to mention the emotional distress and vulnerability.
